On April 22, 2026 the First Ceremony of the Peace Pole was held on Earth Day in front of Solano Community College Library. Multiple Faculty and Staff gathered around the Peace pole display celebrating Earth day and Patwin tribes. The Peace Pole was started by the Japanese Peace Act, which was started by Masahisa Goi in 1955 after World War II. The message with peace prevailing on Earth in many languages was inspired by the devastation of World War II. There are over 200,000 Peace Poles in the world on every continent.
Ethnic Studies Professor and Student Equity and Success Council Committee Chair Amanda Morrison gave a brief acknowledgement on the three tribes recognized as the Patwin people: Cachil DeHe Band of Wintun Indians of the Colusa Indian Community, Kletsel Dehe Band of Wintun Indians, and Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation.
The Pole was organized through collaborations with (SESC) Student Equity & Success Council, where they had 20 languages including three indigenous languages.
“The Patwin people have been committed to the leadership of this land over many centuries; it has been cherished and protected as the elders have instructed the young generations that we are honored and grateful to be here today” Morrison stated
Superintendent President Kellie Butler gave a summary of the significance of the Peace Pole. Peace prevail on Earth seems like a simple act, but it is a reminder not just a symbol. It’s a reminder of how we can remember to bring peace into our conversations.
“Reflecting on the importance of coming together, listening to one another, agree to disagree rather than to be divided, thinking about how we can be more understanding and acceptance society” Butler stated
