Terri Martin’s journey began with determination and willpower. After earning early recognition for her potential with the Young Career Woman Citation of Honor at age 17, she built a respected career in the legal field. She served as a paralegal for both the District Attorney’s Office and the Public Defender’s office. Seeing the extremities from both sides of the court system deepened her understanding of justice and human struggle.
The Justice System was her life, and she was very comfortable for 23 years.
Shockingly, in her mid 40s, everything changed. A devastating auto accident severely injured her back and arms, leaving her disabled and unable to continue the career she had spent decades building.“I couldn’t work anymore,” she recalls. “everything I had built was gone.”
Overcoming that loss, introduced a new beginning. Terri was offered the chance to attend college through the Department of Rehabilitation, and she embraced the opportunity.
“The world opened up to me,” she says. “Even though one chapter of my life had closed, another, maybe even a more meaningful one, was just beginning.”
Terri enrolled at Solano Community College in 1997, determined to rewrite her story. There she pursued degrees in political and social science. She also applied herself in student leadership, where she was elected Social Science Senator.
But her leadership went beyond titles. She completed honors research in Social Science at Juvenile Hall, advocated for SCC Students at both state and national levels, and played a role in passing Solano’s first measure for renovations on campus, including a student center that improved students’ experiences.
Terri’s achievements earned her numerous prestigious honors, including the California State Senate Scholastic Achievement Award, the Alpha Gamma Sigma Outstanding Service Award, the Solano College Scholarship Foundation Award, and a place on the Phi Theta Kappa California Academic Team.
After graduation, Terri retired, but her story was far from over. In 2022 she returned to Solano Community College to serve in Student Development and the Student Pantry. Once again dedicating her energy to supporting and uplifting students. In August 2024, she joined SOAR (Students Overcoming Adversity and Recidivism), where she now walks alongside students facing incarceration, addiction, poverty, and adversity. Struggles she deeply understands.
“At a young age I was dealing with my own trauma,” Terri says. “If you can deal with the healing when the trauma occurs, you really can make that change for yourself … unfortunately, for most students, it didn’t happen that way.”
When asked what message she’d share with every student she’s helped she said, “Believe in yourself and get the help while you can, because there are people here who care, never give up.”
Terri Martin’s story is living proof that purpose can rise from the most unexpected places. From a respected paralegal in the halls of Justice, to a transformative student leader and advocate. From the wreckage of a life-altering accident, to the heart of a program that changes lives. Her journey is a testament of strength, empathy, and compassion.
What began as an ending became a powerful new beginning, not just for Terri, but for every student she’s helped. She brings hope into hopeless places. Every life she’s changed and every soul she’s touched, Terri proves that the human spirit, no matter how broken, was always meant to rise.
