A predicted $15.5 million budget deficit, along with declining enrollment, has forced the Vallejo City Unified School District (VCUSD) board of education to make a final decision on school closures and consolidations by December 2025, affecting students in the 2026-2027 school year.
It is estimated that the $15.5 million 2026-2027 deficit will increase to a staggering $32 million by 2029, and as city-wide enrollment continues to decline, the board of education is forced to consider Lincoln Elementary, Pennycook Elementary, Steffan Manor Elementary, Cooper Elementary, Federal Terrace Elementary, and Highland Elementary for closure, and John Finney Education Complex to be relocated (VCUSD).
“As a Vallejo native and a product of the Vallejo public school system, the closures will have a drastic effect and impact on Vallejo families. In my opinion, there is no positive outcome in this situation for the VCUSD families. Parents who live in Vallejo, the majority of whom already commute up to an hour out of Vallejo for work, will now have to add extra time to the drop-off process, which is bound to lead to negatively impacted attendance for students, especially since the district has already said they will not be supplying transportation for the students who live ways away from new campuses. Vallejo families will have added stress in an already chaotic and stressful time.” said Vallejo resident, Elijah Reed.
There will be a School Closure and Consolidation Town Hall Meeting, held at Vallejo High School, 840 Nebraska St, Vallejo, CA 94590, on Nov. 18, from 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM.
Community residents are encouraged to show up and voice their concerns about these closures and consolidations, and to learn more about the process.
The regular governing board will have a closed session meeting that will take place on Dec. 17, at an undisclosed location. The board will make its final decision in determining the fate of the VCUSD.
