If you’re a college student trying to move out, but can’t because you don’t meet requirements, then you aren’t alone.
As the new generation of home seekers, we are not being paid the amount of money it takes to sustain the current economy. Why is it so hard as a generation to find affordable housing and a good paying job to support it?
The majority of residences require that a tenant make at least twice the rent to even qualify to move in, which I’m sure many young adults and teens do not, especially if they’re college students.
In my opinion, the cost of living, overall, has gotten out of hand. Rent should be charged by age group and not income, because, if we did a survey today, I can bet my last dollar that many college students still reside in their family homes. As students we already have so much piled on our plate; we should not have to worry about where we are going to lay our heads just because we don’t meet overly restrictive requirements.
An ABC News article reports, “what once was relief from the Bay Area has now seen a 29% increase in the cost of homes since 2019” which just further supports my point about the cost of living being a barrier and rent should be based on age group as well as other factors.
Also how is the cost of living continuing to rise, but not the minimum wage? How is this ethical?
Another major issue with the housing crisis is that homeowners aren’t willing to compromise and work with renters. For example, a renter could make twenty dollars below the requirement and be denied. Now they are stuck in a position where they make enough to afford a higher rent but not enough to qualify to move elsewhere.
I have been directly told by 4 apartment complexes that they do not allow full-time students to rent. If the tenant is making on time payments then it shouldn’t matter what they are doing when they leave their homes. It’s almost like a power trip and it isn’t fair and nobody is saying anything or trying to find a solution.
Most community colleges don’t offer on campus living, which surrounding areas should take into consideration when setting income requirements.
As college students, balancing school work and extracurricular activities, our personal time is clearly reduced from the average person.
We need a solution as soon as possible.
