During the conference, we all discussed getting more tutors for the English and Math classes since more students are feeling left out of getting the support that they deserve.
Math 11 already has a “companion class” which is Math 311. Math 311 is a supportive class for statistics “Not everyone is required to take it”. English 1 has a companion class combined into one as an encouraging environment for students.
Professor Commodore proposed a class for Chem 1 that will help students and prepare them for Chemistry “an 18-hour course that is a Non-Credit Class” stated St. German. It will help the increase with Algebra courses since Chemistry courses are already at low rates with English, and Math as well. The reason is that English and Math 11 ( Statistics) need help, Making an impact on the students which is why students are dropping classes.
As a student, Solano does have a problem with increasing more sections of classes like Math, and other complex courses which shows a lack of students being able to sign up for these specific courses. Students at Solano College felt their concerns were not being brought upon when dropping classes in the past. Showing the knowledge towards this proposition is a big step forward for Solano College. St. Commodore is creating a Drop Chart Survey to look into why students are dropping classes based on faculty, and the efficient effort towards the community. The Student Equity voted to keep the student dropping classes as a specific result. Since students are dropping classes with no specific reason and would like to keep a chart of that percentage.
Bringing it as a survey will show how SCC Students feel about the community and faculty itself towards their concerns. Prof. Brinna Michauad explains “ how we don’t wanna create a situation where we are cutting off the faculty” keeping the drop survey convenient and understandable. St. Commodore explains how we can make a drop survey as to why students are not coming to class based on mental health. Student Equity wants to create a drop survey to help lower the cause of students not coming into class or dropping out. Because the students feel like the instructor and the class material is too difficult to understand.
While attending the meeting I suggested “ creating a data chart”. Faculty member Ms. Hill has “ heard the criticism and how some Professors feel that it is an issue between faculty and a student”. Using that sort of tone will hurt Professors just by a data chart showing a percentage of students dropping.
It makes students feel they are “discounting themselves” with how we use those drop surveys – Ms Hill stated. Students and Faculty do not want to take it as a percentage that will bring a conflict onto Professors. “ It will be a call to action” stated Michauad , a Member Student Equity and Success Council.
Student Equity Meeting was Held October 8, 2024 on zoom.
