Quinten R. Voyce is a name that resonates significantly in education in Solano County, California. As a passionate educator and advocate for inclusion, his journey is not only inspiring; it is a narrative of resilience and commitment. As one of the few openly LGBTQ representatives on the Solano Community College District board, Voyce’s mission is to not just be an advocate for educators, but for queer people in Solano.
Born into a family that had no academic tradition, Voyce faced significant challenges throughout his educational journey. “When I got to college, I had no one to tell me how to do this or that,” he recalls, reflecting on the loneliness he felt as a first-generation student.
This experience shaped his vision and determination to be a source of support and inspiration for students who find themselves in similar situations. Quinten knows that education is a door to opportunity, but he also recognizes that this door is often closed to those who don’t have the support needed to open it.
In 2014, Quinten co-founded a dual enrollment program for high school students, a project that has become a staple in his community. Through this initiative, young people have the chance to study university subjects while they are still in high school, opening a world of possibilities that many of them never imagined.
“Seeing the students who have gone through this program, many of whom never imagined they could be in a college classroom, is one of the most rewarding things I have ever experienced,” says Quinten. This experience not only transforms students’ lives, but also strengthens the community, creating a culture of learning and academic advancement.
Quinten’s passion for science, especially biology and chemistry, is reflected in his teaching approach. He believes science should be accessible and relevant, especially for students who may not see themselves represented in high-demand academic fields. “When I teach, I make sure my students see themselves in the stories we tell, in the experiments we perform,” he says, highlighting the importance of identification and cultural relevance in education.
In addition to his work in the classroom, Quinten is an ardent supporter of LGBTQ rights and other social justice issues. His presence on the Solano Community College District Board is a testament to his commitment to ensuring that all voices are heard and respected. “Diversity should not just be a buzzword; it must be a daily practice in our education and in our policies”, he emphasizes. This vision guides their actions and decisions, both in education and community leadership.
The combination of his personal experience, academic background and commitment to inclusion makes Quinten an exceptional leader.
As we look to the future of education in Solano County and beyond, Quinten R. Voyce will be one of many driving forces. With a dedicated heart and a curious mind, he continues to inspire those around him, challenging norms and expanding possibilities. For Quinten, every student is a promise of a better tomorrow, and his mission is to ensure that each of them has a chance to shine.
