Thanksgiving week—a time of full plates, full bellies, and football traditions. As fridges overflowed across America, the NFL’s Week 13 delivered its own feast of drama and action.
The week kicked off in the Motor City, where the red hot Lions hosted the struggling Chicago Bears at Ford Field. Detroit’s offense, a buzzsaw in recent weeks, looked poised to dominate. Meanwhile, rookie quarterback Caleb Williams and the Bears’ offense stumbled early, going scoreless in the first half.
The third quarter offered glimmers of life, with both teams trading touchdowns. Williams then orchestrated a lengthy scoring drive, capping it with a 9-yard strike to Keenan Allen to narrow Detroit’s lead to 10.
Momentum swung when the Bears capitalized on a missed Lions field goal. Williams launched a perfectly placed 29-yard dart to D.J. Moore, bringing the Bears within striking distance. The Chicago defense held Detroit to a quick three-and-out, setting up a potential game-winning drive. With 36 seconds left, Chicago faced fourth down, needing 20 yards.
Williams took a sack, and head coach Matt Eberflus bizarrely opted not to use his timeout. The clock expired, and so did Eberflus’s tenure in Chicago. On Friday, the Bears made history by firing him midseason—the first such move in franchise history.
Fast Forward to a snowy Sunday afternoon in the City of Charm, where the 8-4 Ravens hosted the surging 10-2 Eagles Sunday afternoon. Philadelphia entered on a five-game winning streak, while the Ravens faced mounting pressure in the AFC North race. This matchup was a highly anticipated one with Philly’s run game being one of the best and The Raven’s run defense also being one of the top units in the league.
The Eagles leaned on their ground game, with Saquon Barkley rushing for 107 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries, averaging around 4.7 yards per carry. In contrast, Lamar Jackson and the Ravens aired it out, with the star quarterback throwing 36 times for 23 completions, 237 yards, and two scores. However, Justin Tucker, the normally automatic Ravens kicker, missed three field goals—more than he had in six different seasons.
Despite out gaining the Eagles in both passing and rushing yards, Baltimore couldn’t overcome its mistakes. Philadelphia’s suffocating defense, led by first year Eagles defensive coordinator, Vic Fangio, secured a gritty win, extending the Eagles’ streak to six games. Now 11-2, they return home to prepare for Bryce Young and the revamped Panthers. The Ravens, meanwhile, dropped to 8-5, falling further behind the Steelers, who beat Cincinnati to strengthen their AFC North lead. Pittsburgh leads the division by 2 games. Baltimore must now regroup before traveling up north to the Meadowlands to face the New York Giants in a pivotal matchup.
As the season’s final stretch looms, two NFC juggernauts—Detroit and Philadelphia—are setting the pace. The Lions and Eagles dominate with bruising ground games and relentless defenses, leaving opponents battered and defeated. With playoff scenarios tightening, it’s clear that anyone with Super Bowl aspirations will have to go through one of these two powerhouses. Week 13 was a showcase of the league’s best and worst, setting the stage for an unforgettable race to the finish.
