FAIRFIELD – On March 19th, 2025 the SCC Governing Board had their bi-monthly meeting where they spoke on the subjects of city politics, campus security, and immigration policy.
During the course of the latest SCC Governing Board meeting, a motion was raised that would discourage non-enforcement collaborations with immigration agencies.
The original official motion states “Solano Community College is committed to a safe, inclusive campus by protecting personal information and limiting its use strictly as allowed by law. The policy discourages non-enforcement collaborations with immigration agencies, provides guidance on handling immigration enforcement encounters, and outlines support measures for affected students, faculty, and staff.”
The wording of the motion was called into question by board member Karimah Karah who claimed that “discourage” was too weak of a word and instead opted for the word “limits” and the phrasing of the motion was voted and altered to reflect that.
Later in the meeting, security enhancements for the Vallejo SCC campus were mentioned, as on January 17th, 2024 the board approved a contract with Net Electric, Inc. to assist in the Vallejo Center Security Enhancement Project.
This motion in particular was a time-extension on parts of the contract as well as a credit for unused funds to be returned to the district.
The project is not without complication as, according to Project Manager Jason Yi, there was an incident in which the copper wires for the parking lot light’s electrical system were stolen and approximately two weeks later the project faced two separate vandalism incidents. This issue is being dealt with as there is now an overnight security guard that patrols the area.
The overnight guard does seem to be having success as, according to Yi, “Since we’ve had the overnight security we have not been vandalized since.”
In relation to the incidents, Board President Denis Honeychurch said “It’s Vallejo. It’s a crime ridden city, their Police Department is not effective.”
